Unlike stereo where sound is panned left to right, Dolby Atmos provides a true spatial sound experience. Sounds are individually placed and moved in three-dimensional space, giving you the feeling that the sound is all around you, even above and behind you.

Note: Playback in Dolby Atmos results in larger file sizes on iOS. If you’re streaming, using Wi-Fi is the way to go to use less data. If you’re downloading a Dolby Atmos title, make sure you have plenty of space on your device.

How do I listen to Audible titles in Dolby Atmos?

You can listen to any title marked with the Dolby Atmos badge. Spatial audio is automatically turned on in the Audible app for devices that support Dolby Atmos playback. 

To check if spatial audio is turned on:

1. Go to your Profile.
2. Select the Settings gear icon.
3. Select Data & storage.
4. Check that the Spatial audio is toggled on.

Note: If you want to listen to a title you've already downloaded in spatial audio, you must delete and re-download that title.
  

What devices are compatible with Dolby Atmos?

Your spatial audio setting is on by default in the Audible app for iOS. You’ll need to use a Dolby Atmos-compatible device and headphones when listening.
 

iOS devices

Your Apple device must be updated to iOS 15.1 or later and be connected to a set of supported headphones unless otherwise stated.

• iPhone XS or later (via the device’s built-in speaker)
• iPhone 7 or later
• iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later)
• iPad Pro 11-inch
• iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
• iPad (6th generation or later)
• iPad mini (5th generation or later)

Note: Supported headphones include AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, or Beats Fit Pro. You can control spatial audio and head tracking from your iOS Control Center.
 

Android devices

Some Android devices do not support Dolby Atmos at this time. No specific headphones are required.

To see if your Android device supports Dolby Atmos playback:

1. Go to your Profile.
2. Select the Settings gear icon.
3. Select Data & storage.
4. Check if the Spatial Audio toggle is available and turned on.

Notes:

• If the toggle is available and turned on, your device supports Dolby Atmos playback. If the toggle is missing or grayed out, your device does not currently support Audible playback with Dolby Atmos’.
• Google Pixel devices are not supported at this time. In January 2023, Google announced its spatial audio feature for Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro devices running Android 13. This spatializes Dolby Digital Plus, but it does not support Dolby Atmos—which is Audible’s spatial audio offering.

Fire tablets

Dolby Atmos playback on Audible is supported on Amazon Kindle Fire HCX 8.9 via connected headphones and on the Amazon Fire HD 10.

Audible Cloud Player

• For desktop, spatial audio playback is supported on MacOS 10.12+ with Safari 10+.
• For mobile web, spatial audio playback is supported on iOS 11+ with Safari 9+.

Note: The spatial audio setting is only turned on for iPhones in the 7 series or later with iOS version 15.1 or later.

All Audible titles marked with a Dolby Atmos badge are available in Dolby Atmos. You’ll also see a Dolby Atmos badge in the app player when you’re playing a Dolby Atmos title. 
   

How do I listen to a title I already own in Dolby Atmos?

If you’d like to download the Dolby Atmos version of a title you own, you’ll need to remove the old version from your device first. Once removed, you can re-download it to experience the Dolby Atmos version. You won’t lose your listening position when you do this.
   

Are Dolby Atmos titles available in stereo?

If your device supports Dolby Atmos but you prefer playback in stereo, you’ll need to perform the following steps:
 

Step 1: Turn spatial audio off

1. Go to your Profile.
2. Select the Settings gear icon.
3. Select Data & storage.
4. Toggle spatial audio off.

Step 2: Re-download your title

1. Go to your Library.
2. Select your title’s 3-dot menu.
3. Select Remove from device.
4. Once removed, re-download the title.

Will Audible titles in Dolby Atmos play on Apple Podcast or Amazon Music?

No, Audible titles in Dolby Atmos are only available through the Audible app at this time.
